Kimchi premium FAQ

What is the kimchi premium?

It is the percentage difference between a coin's price on the Korean exchange Upbit and its price on Binance. A positive premium means the Korean price is higher; a negative premium means it is lower.

How is the kimchi premium calculated?

Upbit KRW price ÷ (Binance USDT price × Upbit USDT/KRW price) − 1. CoinCoast uses Upbit's traded USDT price, rather than a bank exchange rate, to compare executable market prices.

What does a high kimchi premium mean?

It is often interpreted as stronger buying demand in Korea. However, deposit or withdrawal suspensions, a recent listing or network maintenance can also cause an unusually large premium for a particular coin.

Can the kimchi premium be arbitraged?

Buying abroad and transferring to Korea to sell may yield less profit than expected or a loss because of foreign exchange rules, exchange transfer limits, price changes during transfers and fees. Use this data for reference only.
