Open interest FAQ

What is open interest (OI)?

It is the size of futures contracts that are still open — not yet closed or expired. It is different from unfilled orders sitting in the order book.

What is the OI change based on?

Contract quantity (number of coins). The dollar value grows when only the price rises, so real position growth is measured in contracts. The USDT value is shown separately.

Does rising OI mean longs are coming in?

No. Every new contract has an equal long and short side. Rising OI alone cannot tell you whether longs or shorts are entering — look at price, funding and the long/short ratio together.

Is OI from other exchanges added in?

No. This page shows Bybit USDT perpetuals only. Binance OI is shown separately on the derivatives page.
